Hormone therapy, also called menopausal hormone therapy or MHT, is available across Sydney through GPs, women’s health clinics and specialists. This page covers the practical side: who can prescribe it, what a first appointment looks like, what it costs, and how to find a provider near you. For the clinical detail on how MHT works, the different types, and the benefits and risks, see our guide to MHT in Australia.

Who prescribes hormone therapy in Sydney

Most women start with a GP. Many GPs prescribe MHT without a referral, and some have additional training in women’s health and menopause. A women’s health clinic can bring several types of care together in one place. If your situation is more complex, a GP may refer you to a gynaecologist or endocrinologist.

What to expect when you start

Starting MHT is usually a step-by-step process. Every experience is different, but most women can expect three stages.

  • First appointment. Your provider reviews your symptoms, medical history and any risk factors.
  • Your prescription. MHT comes as patches, gels, tablets or vaginal options. The right form depends on your symptoms, health history and preferences.
  • Follow-up. A review appointment is common, to see how you are going and adjust if needed.

For a fuller walkthrough of the options and what shapes the choice, see the MHT guide.

Cost and Medicare

A standard GP visit may attract a Medicare rebate, and a dedicated menopause health assessment (MBS item 695) is available through GPs. Many MHT medicines are subsidised under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, which lowers the out-of-pocket cost. Exact costs depend on the provider and the medicine prescribed. Our treatment guide covers what is currently subsidised.

Is hormone therapy right for you

MHT is the most effective treatment for hot flushes and night sweats, and it also helps with sleep and vaginal symptoms. For some women it can ease low mood that is tied to the menopause transition, although it is not a first-line treatment for major depression, and its role for anxiety specifically is less well established. For many women under 60 or within ten years of their last period, the benefits can outweigh the risks when MHT is appropriately prescribed. Suitability is individual, and a prescriber will weigh it up with you. The MHT guide sets out the benefits and risks in full. For independent, evidence-based information on MHT, the Australasian Menopause Society publishes patient resources.

Common questions

Do I need a referral to start HRT in Sydney?
Often not. Many GPs prescribe MHT without a referral. You may choose to see a specialist for more complex needs.

How much does HRT cost?
It depends on the provider and the medicine. Many MHT medicines are PBS-subsidised, and your GP visit may attract a Medicare rebate. See the treatment guide for current detail.

How soon does it work?
Many women notice a difference within a few weeks, with fuller benefit over a few months.

Is HRT safe?
For many women under 60 or within ten years of menopause, MHT is considered safe when prescribed and monitored by a doctor. Your provider will review your individual history.
