What this view shows
Vetted, menopause-informed providers who help with pelvic health through perimenopause and menopause, including pelvic floor weakness, bladder leakage and urgency, prolapse, and the vaginal dryness, discomfort, and recurrent urinary symptoms that come under genitourinary syndrome of menopause. These are common, they are treatable, and you do not have to put up with them.

  • If you are leaking with coughing, laughing, or exercise, or rushing to the toilet, targeted help makes a real difference.
  • If you have vaginal dryness, discomfort, or pain with sex, effective treatments are available through a clinician.
  • If you feel heaviness or a bulge, or anything that worries you, see a clinician to have it assessed.

Who can help: a pelvic floor physiotherapist for assessment and treatment of the pelvic floor, a menopause-informed GP as a first point of contact, and a gynaecologist or women’s health clinic for the medical and surgical end of care.

Common questions about menopause pelvic health

What is genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM)?

GSM is the term for the vaginal dryness, discomfort, and urinary symptoms caused by declining oestrogen at menopause, replacing the older term vaginal atrophy. It’s very common, tends to persist or worsen over time without treatment, and responds well to options such as vaginal oestrogen, moisturisers, and lubricants. A menopause-informed clinician can talk through what suits you.

Is pelvic floor weakness at menopause normal, and is it treatable?

It’s common, particularly with declining oestrogen and if you’ve had children, but it’s not something you have to live with. Pelvic floor physiotherapy is effective for leakage, prolapse symptoms, and general pelvic floor weakness for most women. Earlier assessment generally means better outcomes, so it’s worth seeing a pelvic floor physiotherapist rather than waiting for symptoms to worsen.

What helps with vaginal dryness at menopause?

Options range from over-the-counter vaginal moisturisers and lubricants through to prescription vaginal oestrogen, which is low-dose and applied locally rather than a full-body hormone treatment. A menopause-informed GP or gynaecologist can advise on what’s appropriate for your situation, including alongside other menopausal hormone therapy if you’re using it.

Do I need a referral to see a pelvic floor physiotherapist?

No, you can book directly. A GP referral is only needed if you want to claim a Medicare rebate through a GP Chronic Condition Management Plan, which requires an eligible chronic condition. Otherwise pelvic floor physiotherapy is paid privately or through private health extras cover.

When should bladder leakage or pelvic symptoms be checked by a doctor rather than just a physiotherapist?

See a doctor promptly for any new or unusual vaginal bleeding, especially after menopause, for pelvic pain, or for blood in your urine, since these need medical assessment rather than physiotherapy alone. For general bladder leakage, urgency, or a feeling of heaviness without those red-flag symptoms, a pelvic floor physiotherapist is a reasonable first step, and they’ll refer you on if something needs medical review.
